More about Foswiki
Foswiki is an open-source enterprise wiki and a lean application platform. Content is maintained in the WYSIWYG editor and structured via DataForms – allowing for project spaces, ticket lists, or QM manuals without additional systems. Technical details: Perl, Apache/Nginx (FastCGI), file-based storage with integrated versioning – low maintenance and resource-efficient. Permissions/roles, LDAP/AD, skins/templates, and 200+ plugins make Foswiki highly customizable – ideal for consistent documentation and lightweight business apps.
Structured Wiki & Application Platform
Foswiki is not just a classic wiki, but a “structured wiki.” Content can be stored in form fields on pages and evaluated with an SQL-like query language. This allows for the creation of real web applications like status boards, inventory lists, or bug trackers directly within the wiki, with minimal programming.
Data Forms & Dynamic Content
DataForms allow structured fields to be created on any wiki page – for tickets, projects, or products, for example. These fields can be read out again with macros and search queries and displayed in tables, reports, or overviews. This makes Foswiki a flexible, data-driven platform for individual business applications.
Powerful Search and Query Language
With the integrated SEARCH and Query language, content can be filtered very granularly – by form fields, metadata, timestamps, or access rights. Results can be freely formatted, sorted, or grouped. This enables complex reports and dashboards without having to build a separate database interface.
Versioning & Change History
All content and metadata are stored with versioning. Every change is traceable, and older versions can be compared or restored. By default, Foswiki uses RCS for this; optionally, a pure Perl versioning mechanism is available. This makes the system audit-proof and transparent – important for compliance and traceability.
Fine-Grained Access Control
Permissions can be set at the web level, for individual pages, or even for individual functions – for users as well as for groups. This allows open knowledge areas, internal project spaces, and confidential management spaces to be cleanly separated within a single installation. Especially in a corporate context, this fine access control is a major advantage.
WYSIWYG Editor & Markup Language
In addition to the markup language, Foswiki offers a TinyMCE-based WYSIWYG editor, which greatly simplifies editing for “non-techies.” Tables, formatting, and links can be created like in a text editor, but remain storable as structured wiki markup. This way, beginners benefit from convenience, while power users can continue to work directly with TML.
Skins, Templates & Internationalization
Layout and user interface are fully customizable via skins, templates, and CSS. The interface is translated into numerous languages, including support for various character sets and UTF-8 URLs. This allows Foswiki to be visually adapted to corporate designs and easily used in international teams.
Plugin Architecture with Hundreds of Extensions
The functionality can be greatly extended via a stable plugin API. The community provides over 300 extensions – from diagrams, table tools, tagging, calendars, and image galleries to database integrations and auth backends. Many TWiki plugins can also continue to be used via a compatibility plugin.
Simple, File-Based Storage & Low Requirements
By default, Foswiki stores content in text files instead of a relational database. This keeps system requirements low, simplifies backups, and facilitates deployments. If needed, databases like MongoDB or MySQL can be connected via extensions to support scaling or special queries.
Notifications, Feeds & Email Integration
Changes can be tracked via email notifications and RSS/Atom feeds. This allows teams to stay up-to-date without constantly having to manually check the wiki. In combination with workflows and forms, Foswiki is also suitable for ticket-like processes, status reports, and regular project updates.
Frequently asked questions
When is Foswiki the better choice than MediaWiki?
Foswiki excels in companies and organizations: structured content with forms, permissions for individual areas and pages, notifications, and evaluations via query language. MediaWiki is ideal for large, open knowledge collections in the style of Wikipedia. If you need an intranet, a QM manual, or project spaces with access control, Foswiki is usually the better choice.
Can I migrate an existing Foswiki or TWiki to you?
Yes. Foswiki stores content in text files, which makes migration manageable: We take over webs, pages, attachments, and users, check installed plugins, and test everything before the switch. TWiki installations can usually also be migrated, and many TWiki plugins continue to run via the compatibility layer.
Is the Standard plan sufficient for my team?
What matters less is the number of accounts than the number of concurrent users and the plugins used. For teams and departments, your own VM in the Standard plan is usually sufficient. If usage grows, you can book a higher performance tier – without reinstallation.
