More about MediaWiki

MediaWiki is the open-source software behind Wikipedia—created in the early 2000s within the Wikimedia community for scalable, collaborative knowledge management. Today, it serves as a flexible platform for corporate wikis and project documentation: extensible, scalable, and designed for transparent collaboration.

Information Architecture (Links, Categories, Namespaces)

Information Architecture (Links, Categories, Namespaces)

Wikilinks, categories, redirects, and namespaces structure knowledge into clear paths. “What-links-here”, special page reports, and maintenance lists make dependencies visible and support refactoring. This ensures that even large knowledge bases remain consistent, navigable, and maintainable in the long term.

Templates & Transclusion (incl. Lua/Scribunto)

Templates & Transclusion (incl. Lua/Scribunto)

Templates create reusable content blocks and automated table entries or lists. With Lua/Scribunto, logic can be encapsulated—from formatting rules to data processing. This results in uniform presentations with minimal editorial effort and a low error rate.

Versioning, Diffs & Rollbacks

Versioning, Diffs & Rollbacks

Every change is historized with author, timestamp, and comment. Diffs highlight differences with character-level precision, making reviews precise and fast. Rollbacks and “undo” functions allow for the restoration of verified states—essential for quality assurance and compliance.

Editing: VisualEditor & Wikitext

Editing: VisualEditor & Wikitext

VisualEditor lowers the barrier to entry with WYSIWYG editing, while Wikitext offers maximum control for advanced users. Template wizards, previews, and syntax help speed up editing. Teams thus combine simple editing with deep customizability for complex layouts.

Discussion Pages, Watchlists & Notifications

Discussion Pages, Watchlists & Notifications

Discussion pages bundle feedback on the respective article within its context. Watchlists and email/web notifications inform users about changes, mentions, and reverts. This keeps review cycles short, involves knowledge holders, and ensures transparent decision-making.

User Permissions, Protection & Moderation

User Permissions, Protection & Moderation

Role-based permissions and page protection regulate who can read, edit, or move content. Patrol/review workflows, abuse filters, and anti-spam mechanisms secure open installations. This allows for a balance between participation and quality—from open wikis to strictly regulated documentation.

File & Media Management

File & Media Management

Uploads, previews, and automatic thumbnails integrate images, PDFs, or videos directly into pages. Metadata, file versions, and reusable media galleries facilitate management and curation. Media remains findable, up-to-date, and consistently integrated—even in extensive archives.

Search & Findability

Search & Findability

Full-text search (e.g., with CirrusSearch/Elasticsearch) delivers relevant results with filters, highlights, and sorting. Categories, template parameters, and structured links improve discovery and context. Users find content faster, and editors identify duplicates and gaps more efficiently.

Internationalization & Translation

Internationalization & Translation

Multilingualism includes localized UI, language-specific pages, and translation workflows (Translate extension). Fallbacks and status displays support global teams in maintenance and quality. International knowledge bases thus remain consistent, current, and culturally accessible.

Extensions & APIs

Extensions & APIs

A large extension ecosystem (including VisualEditor, Semantic MediaWiki, TemplateStyles) extends functionality precisely. Action and REST APIs open up integrations for bots, import/export, and automation. MediaWiki thus grows in a controlled manner with requirements—without vendor lock-in.

Frequently asked questions

Can I migrate my existing MediaWiki to you?

Yes. We check the version/extensions, set up a staging instance, and test templates, jobs, and uploads. Then we migrate files & database, take over cronjobs/jobs, SSL, and redirects. Go-live occurs via DNS switch (short TTL) with almost no downtime.

Can I also use Semantic MediaWiki?

Yes, in the Premium plan on a dedicated VM. SMW requires dedicated resources, specific PHP/DB setups, and more system control. In shared hosting, a curated, fixed selection of extensions is available (without SMW).

Which extensions are included in the Standard plan?

The following curated selection is pre-installed and available:
ConfirmEdit, Cite, CiteThisPage, Gadgets, ImageMap, InputBox, Interwiki, LocalisationUpdate, Nuke, ParserFunctions, PDF Handler, Poem, SpamBlacklist, SyntaxHighlight, TitleBlacklist, VisualEditor, WikiEditor, Widgets.
