Mastodon is a free, decentralized microblogging network: Many independent servers (“instances”) federate via ActivityPub. Join or self-host, chronological feeds without advertising or tracking, strong moderation according to your own rules. Launched in 2016 by Eugen Rochko (Mastodon gGmbH). Frequently asked questions
Can I migrate my existing Mastodon account or an entire instance?
Yes. At the account level, Mastodon supports “Account move” (redirection/alias) and the transfer of your followers; posts themselves are not migrated. For entire instances, migration is done via backup/restore of DB, media, and configuration – ideally with the same domain. We plan staging, a short freeze, and DNS switching.
Do I need my own domain – and can I use my existing one?
An own domain is recommended (e.g., @name@social.yourdomain.com). This way, you retain your identity permanently and can switch instances if needed without losing handles. Existing domains can be integrated (Webfinger, TLS, DNS), including subdomain setup.
Is my reach limited to my instance, or do I reach the entire Fediverse?
Mastodon federates via ActivityPub: Accounts on different instances follow, like, and boost each other. Visibility is created through hashtags, boosts, mentions, and shared networks; optionally, relays increase the discovery of new content. Your reach is therefore not limited to your own instance.
